Project Hail Mary — TES21

Hi Reader,

Let me add my voice to the chorus of praise for the movie Project Hail Mary, directed by my Clone High friends Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. My family and I loved it.

If you’ve read the book, you’ll be happy to know that the film’s love for the source material is very evident. Phil and Chris took everything great about it and amplified it without interfering with its spirit. There’s so much heart, and more than that, it’s a very intimate film, even though it largely takes place in the vastness of space. There’s strong chemistry between biologist Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) and the alien Rocky (puppet performed by James Ortiz), but perhaps just as much between Grace and mission director Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) in a powerful but subtle way.

Grace’s line, “Some of us are failures. Some of us don’t rise to the occasion,” really resonated with me and my striving artist’s brain, making his collaboration with Rocky all the more meaningful when he’s forced to face the dire situation they’re in.

Full disclosure: I did contribute in a super-micro way as a consultant for Rocky’s musical alien voice (not the human-computer version). But know that I mean it when I say this movie is something extraordinary—perhaps even capable of reviving a struggling film industry.
