Moscow Orchestral Recording Session Booked

Hello Reader,

Two new songs – "My Unicorn" and "Einstein's Space and Van Gogh's Sky" – are close to completion, and both will feature, at least in part, an orchestra recorded remotely in Moscow. This would normally be cost-prohibitive, but by booking a shared session (meaning several other people will be recording the orchestra throughout the day), it becomes possible. There will also be a video crew on hand to record, so keep an eye out for video on The Escaping Society. I plan on posting excerpts from the session in House of Abandoned Pools and in its entirety for members of The Conservatory. I hope to have one or both released in January and a third following soon after.

Joni Mitchell's Influence

Both of these songs were influenced by Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," specifically Vince Mendoza's stunning orchestral arrangement and Wayne Shorter's exceptional saxophone performance. Two parts to note: the strings opening with a lovely fog of an ostinato, and the cadence at the end that resolves first to minor before settling into major—with Shorter moving from the suspended 2nd to the 3rd. Pure magic. I'm not saying I've come anywhere near this—this can't be replicated, but it certainly was musically and lyrically inspirational. I may do a deeper analytical dive into this song in The Conservatory at some point. Behold:
